When there is a skin lesion, which is not itchy/painful, present for a long time, more than an year, among other skin diseases, it is also important to exclude skin cancer.
There are mainly 3 types. Basal cell carcinoma which present as a skin coloured/pigmented nodule, squamous cell carcinoma is usually ulcerated and melanoma which has dark and heterogenous pigmentation. Face is a common site but any body part can be involved.
Preventive measures
· If there is a non healing lesion or wound, a dermatological consultation is necessary.
· Any change in colour, size and border of a mole has to be observed.
· Sun protection is important. Avoid sun exposure between 9am and 3pm; use an umbrella/hat; if necessary apply a sunscreen cream.
Treatment
If suspected of skin cancer, a skin biopsy with histopathological examination is done. If confirmed, in most cases, the cancer lesion is removed surgically.
