Hair fall - alopecia areata "khoiro"

It is characterized by patchy loss of hair on the scalp (head). There is a circular area of hair loss, with normal scalp skin. Usually there is one patch only, less commonly few patches and rarely it can be extensive involving large area of the scalp. Eyebrows and the beard area can also be affected.

It is due to an immunological process in the body, which weakens the hair roots. The hair, surrounding the patch, can be pulled out easily.

This type of hair loss, which develops very fast, is alarming and cause of anxiety for the patient. Normally It is a self limiting process, which resolves spontaneously in few months (within 6 months), except in few cases.

Treatment stops hair fall and accelerates regrowth. This consists in the application of topical and intralesional steroids. There are home remedies such as rubbing ginger or garlic on the hairless areas.

Medical treatment is simple and effective. You should treat alopecia areata and in the initial phase, when you first notice the hairless patch.
