Janai khatira or herpes zoster is a viral skin disease. Presents with pani khatira, pain and burning, mainly on the janai wearing sites of the body.
Painting singhas at two edges of the rashes to stop the skin disease is a myth. But many still believe and follow it.
The disease may resolve spontaneously in young persons and rashes almost never cross the midline of the body, unless the person is severly immunocompromised. These facts have been wrongly linked to the painted singhas. There is no scientific basis in painting singhas or in the paints used in the treatment of the virus.
The medical treatment with antiviral drug has to be started immediately to avoid complication known as post herpetic neuralgia. Many times painting singha and waiting for improvement delays the treatment with severe consequences.
