“Doctor, can you suggest me a cream which I can use?” This is a frequent question from youngsters who are having pimples.
It may seem strange to you that you need to use a moisturizer on your acne prone face which usually is already oily.
Why to use?
· You may have a mixed type of facial skin, where some areas of the face are oily and some dry.
· The topical applications for acne quite often induce dryness, mild erythema and scaling. Moisturizers help to reduce this.
· It is necessary to maintain intact the barrier function of the facial skin.
What to use?
There are thousands of products in the market and they are not well regulated. Few things to consider are –
· Choose a product where it is written “oil free” meaning it contains humectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin rather than oils and “non comedogenic” meaning it does not clog the pores.
· A lotion, which is less oily, is better than a cream. If the face is very oily, then it is better that you use a gel based moisturizer.
How to use?
Use only when and where there is dryness, redness and scaling.
