Excessive hair fall - may be Telogen Effluvium

Writer's picture: drdpshresthadrdpshrestha

You may be noticing too many fallen hairs, while taking shower or combing. This may be a condition known as telogen effluvium (TE), when the hairs rapidly shed at the end of the hair cycle. Normally 100-150 hairs shed every day.

Mostly, this type of hair fall is associated with psychological and /or physical stress due to illness, exams, working environment, social events etc. Drugs and inappropriate  hair products use are also  responsible. Vitamins and hormones may have some role.

In most cases there is normal regrowth, so it is better to wait for few months. Avoid medicated shampoos and use a mild shampoo (sulphate free). If hair fall continues, better a dermatological consultation.
