Acne - what you should do

The most common complication of acne are post acne scars which give an unpleasant look. Usually severe acne such as acne vulgaris with many pustules and acne conglobata with lumps leave scars. There are different types of scars – ice-pick, rolling, boxcar, atrophic and hyper trophic, the most common being ice pick. They are deep, narrow and pitted scars.

Skin problems, like acne, which are on the most visible area, the face, may be a reason of comments from peers, colleagues and family members. This can have psycho-social impact on young adolescents, lowering their self esteem.

The best is to prevent and treat acne early and appropriately, to reduce or prevent scars.

In most cases, after resolution, they leave reddish or brownish areas which may be slightly depressed. These heal gradually, in weeks to months. Sun protection is very important. Use an umbrella, hat or scarf, and a broad spectrum water based sunscreen with a SPF 30 or more.

Acne scars improve gradually with time when acne has resolved. Topical tretinoin (a vitamin A derivative) helps in the improvement of scars. There are no effective ways to remove scars fast, although this may be the main concern of the patients.

If the scars are extensive, deep and disfiguring, there are invasive procedures such as peeling, dermoabrasion, microneedling etc, about which, one has to be well informed of their efficacy and possible side effects.
