Chillblains are red rashes on the fingers and/or toes, which come in winter, due to repeated exposure to cold, air and/or water. With time, the fingers start to swell, rashes increase and blisters form, which breaks, forming painful and itchy sores.
This makes use of hands for simple daily activities very painful and frustrating.
They can be just an inflammatory response to cold or associated with other systemic diseases such as connective tissue diseases.
Prevention from cold is a must; medications may not help.
· Always wear warm gloves and socks in winter.
· Wear utility (rubber)gloves when washing.
· Only use warm water to wash during winter.
· Eat with a spoon.
· Warm your hands and feet with a heater.
If pain and rashes increase, consult a dermatologist.
