Hair cycle and telogen effluvium

There are 100,000 to 150000 hair on a human scalp, and on average 100 hair fall every day. On average scalp hair grow 1cm per month.

Each hair follicle goes through 3 stages – growth (anagen), involution (catagen) and rest (telogen). The scalp hair remains in the growth phase for about 3 years, while only 3 months in the rest stage. More than 90% of the hair are in the anagen phase.

Sometimes a large portion of hair may go rapidly into rest phase and shed. This is called telogen effluvium. There is extensive and diffuse thinning of the hair. This is mainly due to physiological stress caused by high fever, major surgery, trauma, hormonal changes, diet, psychological stress etc.

There is no specific treatment for this type of hair fall.

In most cases it resolves spontaneously within 6 months.
