Hand eczema, common household skin problem

Hand eczema is an inflammatory condition, due to wear and tear caused by water, soap, detergents, cement etc. The fingers and palms become red, dry, scaly, itchy and start to crack. It is more common in those who work with hands, cooks, houseworkers, farmers, building workers and nurses. In winter dry skin aggravates it. When hand eczema aggravates, it is painful to perform daily activities such as washing, eating, writing etc.

The causes are a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Hand eczema is a mixed eczema (endogenous and exogenous).

Prevention tips

· Use soap when required only. Soaps which contain petroleum are better.

· Use regularly a simple moisturizer such as petroleum jelly and glycerine.

· Use utility (rubber) gloves when doing wet work and cotton gloves when doing dry work.

· Eat with a spoon if the palms are red, dry or scaly.

The treatment is mainly with topical steroids and moisturizers. Allegro-diagnostic tests may be necessary.
