Itchy rashes in summer - Can be insect bites or insect allergies

In summer, more commonly in children, there can be small, very itchy rashes, commonly with a central point or punctum. This may be due to an insect bite or due to contact with insects.

Most of the time you do not see the insect. The most common insects responsible are the fleas (upiyan), and less commonly it can be ticks (kirna) or bedbugs (udus). Insects are more common in moist and dark areas, in cotton mattresses and carpets and in pets such as dogs, cats and birds.

Prevention

· Clean and disinfect (with Dettol water) the living areas regularly

· Sun dry matresses and carpets

· Bathe and disinfect dogs and cats

· Keep the birds (pigeons) away from the living areas

Treatment

The primary treatment is with topical steroids and oral antihistamines. A dermatological consultation is required for the use of medication.
