Herpes zoster or Janai Khatira is a viral disease. The virus which cause chicken pox in childhood , varicella zoster virus, also causes herpes zoster in the later age.
It starts with pain and tingling sensation followed by appearance of vescicles, which come in grape like clusters and segmental distribution, only on one side of the body. The most common site is the lower chest, hence the name Janai khatira. In many , specially elderly, the pain is very severe, and if not treated timely, it can last for months.
It is important to treat within 72 hours of the starting of the symptoms, after consultation with a dermatologist. Do not waste time, painting tiger or lion, it is just a myth.
The person with herpes zoster can transmit the virus to healthy individuals, who have not been infected with the virus. And they will present with chicken pox.
