Moles - the ABCD rule

Moles or nevi are abnormal growth of normal cells.

The most common moles are pigmented- brown to blackish and are known as melanocytic nevi. Many of them can be of skin colour. Usually small, < 0.5 cm, but can be big as to cover large areas of the body. When big and in visible areas such as the face, may give undesirable appearance.

Moles are present at birth or appear in early childhood. They are more common on the face but any site can be affected.

Most are benign or good, but there is a very little possibility that they can become bad or malignant. There is a simple ABCD rule –

A – the mole is becoming irregular or asymmetrical

B – the border is irregular

C – there is change in colour

D – there is rapid increase in size

If you notice above signs, a dermatological consultation is necessary.
