Soap and syndet (synthetic soap)

Cleaning the skin consists in the removal of dirt, oil, dead cells and cosmetics. This keeps the skin healthy and gives a desirable look.

Natural soap bars are most commonly used. Soaps are sodium, potassium or ammonium salts of fatty acids. Soaps are excellent in foaming and cleansing. But, they can cause dryness and irritation. They make the skin surface alkaline, which may favour infections. Some soaps contain glycerin.

Syndets are soapfree and made of synthetic chemical substances. They are milder to the skin and has a pH similar to the natural pH of the skin.

Tips for soap use-

· Soaps containing glycerin is best for common use.

· If you have dry and/or sensitive skin, it is better to use syndet bar or “soap free” liquid soap.

· Always apply a moisturizer ( petroleum jelly or Vaseline lotion) after using soap or syndet.

· Avoid using excessive soap or syndet. Daily washing with water with twice/thrice weekly use of soap/syndet can be sufficient for the body.

For face once daily is good.
