Sun allergy - Spring skin problem

Spring is a transition season from winter to summer. The weather becomes warmer and the sun stronger. There is also small variation in the composition of ultraviolet rays in sunlight. We start spending more time outside, and tend to cover our body less.

Polymorphic light eruption is the most common type of sun allergy. It is most common during this season. The rashes are small, red or skin coloured , very itchy, mainly on the neck, forearms and face.

Prevention – protect from sun

· Avoid sun exposure between 10am and 2pm.

· Wear full sleeves and cover the neck

· Use an umbrella or a wide brimmed hat

· Apply broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or more, twice daily 8am (or half an hour before going out) and 11am (after 3-4 hours after previous application)

Treatment

Mild to moderate types are treated with topical steroids.
